Onsite Volunteer Teaching English Program

"Planned to stay for 4 days and I am now living here"
Volunteer Teacher Ron, Usa

Our "On Site" Volunteer Teaching Program: is offered 2 nights a week, with a third night for language exchange.  Volunteers will be expected to volunteer 2 nights giving classes and 1 night for language exchange.  Volunteers will be expected to both plan and teach Costa Rican students from ages 4 to 45, with help from coordinators.  Our classes follow a monthly schedule of "Cheat Sheets" and each new teacher will receive a log book with notes on students from past teachers.  Classes for kids are dynamic and interactive including cut and pasting, playing games on the street, trips to the supermarket, fruit store and the variety store for some Costa Rican treats! Adults classes are given in a very relaxed and casual way.

The lack of Spanish at times can be awkward but is actually the appeal of our Program.   This is what makes our classes work, as students on both sides find ways to communicate and therefore have the chance to put all that they are learning into immediate action.  It's actually shocking to see how your Spanish will improve and the student's English as well!!

The year schedule will be as follows from
January to May and September to November:
Day: Tuesday Wednesday Friday
Class: Ages 4-12 Ages 18 to Adult Exchange night Ages 13 to adult
Time: 6:30-8:00 pm 6:30-8:30 pm 6:30-8:30 pm

Each Volunteer will be organized into one of the existing age based groups.

Mother and Child: Children from ages 4-6 and will in most cases be both mother and child's first experience with English.

Grade school and High school: Grade school English is still very simple and will be based mainly on conversation and helping students to comprehend grammar issues that they have already been taught but do not understand.

High school 1 will be the lower level students that we would like  to be able to help further before they get lost in the system.  High school 2 are students that need to have better preparation for the practical use of the language be it for helping them actually make the grade to continue in University etc or to just give them more confidence for those that will be using it in the workforce.

University/Adult: Levels vary from absolutely nothing to high level students that just want to practice and learn everyday practical phrases.  The average age of this level is 26-30.

Teaching Program requirements:
Volunteers do not need to have any teaching certificates or experience, but a good grasp of the English language and the desire to teach is a prerequisite.  If possible, volunteers should arrive the Thursday prior for Friday night Spanish/English language exchange program when new teachers will meet last months teachers and students and review teaching logs etc.

What is your onsite English program?
Our onsite volunteer Costa Rica program is teaching English to our local community.  We have many groups, 4-6 with parents, 7-9, 10-12 on one night, 18 and adults on another.  Friday night we do an exchange with all the foreigners studying Spanish.  The volunteer program is only offered to those making a 4 week commitment as we need at least one month to be able to develop a good class environment.
