Volunteer postings within town and surroundings

These postings change periodically.  The Individual volunteer programs we offer are based in the social area usually teaching or assisting in schools or in educational type programs.  Starting February of each year we can have you placed for a minimum of 3 weeks in the private bilingual school.

The local nutrition, public grade school and high school sometimes take volunteers but it cannot be booked until arrival in Orosi and meeting the head teacher.  Volunteering in these 3 locations is getting a little tricky as their insurance policy doesn't cover volunteers and they are afraid to go against the regional office's rules on non students and non faculty on the premises.  If you’re interested in doing some other type of volunteer work while here in Orosi, you’d need to see what’s available once you’re here in town.  Volunteer info available from our Otiac offices!

New for 2010!

Local grade school in Paraiso
would love to have you join them!

Teaching English and helping out around the school.
Great director and staff! 3-5 hours per day

From January to Easter!
A local housing project is looking for volunteer to help with basic construction work be it hauling sand cement etc to building wall for those with experience.  A great way to help out and meet great people that will be really appreciative of any help they can get! A simple lunch of rice and beans is included on the project site!

VOLUNTEERING in other areas of COSTA RICA

As for volunteer positions in Costa Rica, there are tons of programs but they do charge you to be involved, usually $10.00-$20.00 a day which is usually to help them with the costs of the project and usually includes 2/3 meals per day.  Unfortunately it's hard to track down the real ones that are really there to cover a need and not just there for show.  Many students find their info from guidebooks, and then check them out once arriving here in Costa Rica before making any decisions.

The teaching opportunities in the public school system are getting limited as the  government is trying to make sure that foreigners are not taking jobs away from Costa Ricans.   As for a Paid “Short Term Volunteer”, there are options to work in Costa Rica but there is not a lot of info to be found in advance and as there are many people looking to do the same it makes it pretty competitive!  With our Spanish school we do offer a discount to students studying Spanish that are willing to volunteer 6 hours a week, but it in no way is a paid job.  Those that have found paying jobs do it via 2 or 3 different institutes in the Cartago area and are usually working at night!

Nursing or doctors require a ton of paperwork to volunteer in Costa Rican hospitals.  If interested please book through a doctor volunteering program!

FAQs for in town volunteer placements

What is the best time or is there any time that's NOT good to come to volunteer?
If your main goal is to volunteer in Orosi town placements, we would suggest to avoid December and January and the first 2 weeks in July as this is holiday and exam time.  If you'd like to join our onsite teaching program then June-August is our summer break!

What type of programs are there in Orosi and surrounding areas?
It's a small town so there is NO seniors home, orphanage or hospital.  As mentioned above most work in town is in the bilingual school with possibilities in the Nutrition center or public school or high school.  This would normally have volunteers helping with or teaching English to the primary school aged children and high school students.
